In lieu of a full time minister, St. Andrew's Church Lisbon rotates visiting ministers from The Church of Scotland on a quarterly basis.

Born in Glencoe, Scotland, Angus’s ancestral roots are in the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides. Brought up mainly in Oban, Argyllshire, he is a graduate of Glasgow, London and Edinburgh Universities (from the latter with a PhD on St Augustine’s biblical exegesis), was ordained in 1979, and his home ministry took him to four beautiful parts of Scotland – Argyll, Edinburgh, the Western Isles and Kinross-shire. He has also preached and lectured in many countries.

 

In 2006, Angus was appointed Chaplain in Ordinary to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Following her death, he was appointed an Extra Chaplain by His Majesty, King Charles III. In 2015-16, he served as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, in that capacity visiting St Andrew’s, Lisbon, in April 2016, to take part in the congregation’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

In 1983, Angus married Marion, whom he had known since childhood, their respective parents being close friends. They have four children and six grandchildren, under the age of seven. Since retirement in 2021, Angus has undertaken several locum-ships in Edinburgh, and one, last summer, at Christ Church, Bermuda.

 

Angus and Marion look forward to returning to St Andrew’s, Lisbon, where they have had three previous periods of ministry, to reconnecting with friends, and to making new ones. Having been appointed Interim Moderator of the congregation last December, Angus’s prayer and desire is to see St Andrew’s, as a congregation of Christ’s one church, grow spiritually, numerically, and in unity, with a deepening awareness of, and commitment to, the imperative of Christian mission, spreading the light of Christ in Lisbon and beyond.
